New chapter identity reflects expanded reach and commitment to introducing more young people to golf and life skills
Columbia, MD — First Tee Howard County, a youth development organization that uses golf to teach life skills and core values, is expanding its reach beyond Howard County to serve more young people throughout central Maryland. In recognition of this growth, the chapter will now be known as First Tee Central Maryland.
As part of the expansion, First Tee Central Maryland is introducing a new fall mini session at Island Green in Westminster, bringing its programming to Carroll County and creating additional opportunities for young people to experience the game of golf in a supportive, engaging environment. Regular sessions are planned for the spring and summer.
Through its programs, First Tee combines golf instruction with lessons that help young people build confidence, develop resilience, demonstrate respect and strengthen their interpersonal skills. The chapter’s expanded regional presence will help make these experiences accessible to more families across central Maryland.
The new fall mini session at Island Green–Westminster, which begins on Oct. 17 and runs for four weeks, represents an important step in the chapter’s growth and its commitment to reaching new communities. The program will introduce participants to the fundamentals of golf while incorporating First Tee’s emphasis on character development and life skills.
“With our Howard County programs at capacity, expanding into Carroll County will allow us to reach more young people and better serve families who currently travel significant distances to participate. Carroll County is a growing communities with an unmet need for youth programming that combines golf with life skills development. We’re excited to bring First Tee to Westminster and expand our impact across central Maryland,” said Steve Weathersbee, executive director of First Tee Central Maryland.
The chapter’s new name reflects its broader geographic focus while maintaining its commitment to the mission and values that have guided its work in Howard County for more than a quarter of century. By expanding into additional communities, First Tee Central Maryland aims to connect more young people with the game of golf and the valuable lessons it can teach both on and off the course.
